Jardim do Campo Grande, also known as Jardim Mário Soares, is situated in a central area of Lisbon, in the zone that bears its name. This extensive green space takes the form of a long strip, laid out along the area's main artery. It is traversed by Avenida do Brasil, thus dividing it into two distinct parts.
Surrounded by important urban axes, the garden constitutes a remarkable green counterpoint within the dense city fabric, offering a calmer and more natural environment in the heart of the capital.
The area where the garden is now located has a history spanning centuries, having once been known as Campo de Alvalade. This site served various purposes over time, from a stage for military events to popular fairs, such as the famous Campo Grande or Nozes Fair.
Its transformation into a "Public Promenade" began in the 19th century, progressively acquiring garden characteristics. It was here that Lisbon's first horse races took place. The garden's design and structure evolved through interventions from the 17th to the 20th centuries, reflecting different concepts of green spaces.
Characterized by its vast area and rich vegetation, Jardim do Campo Grande presents itself as an authentic natural refuge. Its layout combines more formal avenues, especially in one of its parts, with wide lawn areas and winding paths bordered by a great diversity of trees.
In the garden, it is possible to find various botanical species, some rare in Portugal, such as the paper mulberry, in addition to palm trees, lime trees, eucalyptus, and jacarandas. This variety of flora creates a pleasant and inviting environment for a peaceful stroll, and attracts various bird species that find refuge here.
In the heart of the garden, the large lake is one of its most emblematic and attractive features. With an organic shape, its densely wooded banks contribute to creating an atmosphere of tranquility, almost as if one were far from the city's hustle and bustle.
This body of water offers a picturesque setting. It is possible to rent small rowing boats, allowing for a different perspective of the garden and a relaxing experience in the midst of the urban environment.
The garden hosts an interesting collection of public art pieces that punctuate its paths and lawns. Among them are various sculptures and busts honoring important figures in Portuguese history and culture, such as Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, Luísa Todi, and António Pedro.
One can find works from different eras and styles, including bronze and stonework statues, ceramic panels, and more contemporary pieces. These works enrich a stroll through the garden, transforming it into an unexpected and pleasant cultural route.
