The Amoreiras Garden, also known as Marcelino Mesquita Garden, is located in Praça das Amoreiras, in the Rato area of Lisbon. This green space is situated in an urban environment characteristic of the capital, and its position is notable for its proximity and connection to the monumental structure of the Aqueduct of Free Waters, whose imposing arches delimit one of its extremities, creating a distinctive setting.
Inaugurated in 1759, this garden is one of the oldest in Lisbon and its creation is intrinsically linked to the vision of the Marquis of Pombal. Its implementation was part of a larger project for this area, which aimed to be the city's first industrial hub, dedicated to silk production. Hence the name "Amoreiras" (mulberry trees), referring to the trees from which the essential raw material for this industry was extracted.
An aspect of particular relevance is the existence of the Mother of Water of Amoreiras in the subsoil of the garden. This historical reservoir played a crucial role in the city's water supply system, receiving and distributing water from the aqueduct, testifying to the water and infrastructural importance of the area over the centuries.
With a rectangular layout, the garden presents a classic arrangement, centered by a fountain. Its structure invites a tranquil stroll, in a well-maintained and pleasant environment. In addition to the vegetation and the serenity of the place, the garden stands out for the presence of tile panels. These artistic elements, of great cultural value, are dispersed throughout the space and come from the Church of Luz de Carnide, being attributed to the mastery of Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes.
Complementing its recreational character, the garden also includes a kiosk, which, by its architecture, integrates into the overall space, and a leisure area dedicated to the youngest, with a playground, making it a meeting point for residents and visitors.
