The Jardim da Irmã Lucia is located in the Areeiro area, a district of Lisbon characterized by a predominantly residential and local commerce environment. This particular green space surrounds the Igreja de São João de Deus, extending on both sides of the temple, and is bordered by some of the area's main arteries, such as Avenida do México and Avenida Marconi, in addition to bordering Praça de Londres. Its central position within the urban development gives it a natural integration into the city's daily life.
With an area of approximately 3200 square meters, the Jardim da Irmã Lucia presents itself as a place conducive to relaxation and outdoor enjoyment. It is an open space, featuring extensive, carefully maintained lawns and dense tree cover that offers shade and coolness. Paved pedestrian paths, dotted with wooden benches, invite tranquil strolls, allowing for a break from the urban routine. The harmonious coexistence between vegetation and the built environment is one of its striking characteristics.
The garden is adorned with various sculptures, some of which resemble large human figures, integrating into the green landscape and lending it a unique atmosphere. Some of these sculptural pieces have an interesting origin, coming from the former Teatro Monumental, which has since been demolished. The presence of a kiosk with traditional Portuguese architecture, enveloped by foliage, adds a distinctive touch to the scene, while the Portuguese stone pathways reinforce the space's cultural identity.
The name "Jardim da Irmã Lucia" is a tribute to a figure of great relevance in Portugal's religious history. Lúcia dos Santos, better known as Irmã Lúcia, was one of the three shepherd children who claimed to have witnessed the apparitions of Our Lady in Fátima in 1917. The naming of this garden, which occurred in 2005, recognizes her life journey and the significance her story holds for many, conferring upon the place a distinct cultural and symbolic dimension.
Designed for everyone's enjoyment, the garden features a playground, providing a safe and fun space for children. Additionally, there is a dog park, allowing visitors with pets to enjoy a dedicated area where their dogs can roam freely. These facilities reflect a commitment to offering a diverse and inclusive leisure spot for the community and visitors.
