The Water Garden is located in the riverside area of Parque das Nações, in Lisbon. This space is part of a modern urban environment and stands out for its proximity to the Tagus River estuary, providing a contemporary and open setting, typical of this renewed area of the Portuguese capital.
Inaugurated in 1998, for the occasion of Expo '98, which had the oceans as its central theme, this garden was conceived as a tribute and a reflection on humanity's relationship with water. It proposes a symbolic path that illustrates the use and management of this vital resource throughout history, through various devices and concepts related to the aquatic environment.
The garden invites a walk that simulates the course of a river, from its source to its mouth, unfolding into three distinct sections. The first, nicknamed the Garden of Palms, evokes the origin of water, with a flow that springs from an imposing wall and heads towards a lake. Further on, the Mediterranean Orchard, with its warm colors, integrates the notable Waterfall Building, where water jets create a dynamic atmosphere. The path culminates in Lake Ulysses and the Hydraulic Garden, a space that functions as an open-air museum, displaying primitive hydraulic mechanisms and machines, surrounded by dense vegetation and small islets.
The design of the Water Garden resulted from the collaboration between landscape architect João Gomes da Silva and visual artist Fernanda Fragateiro. Fragateiro's artistic interventions, which include a set of sculptures and tile pieces, visually enrich the space and reinforce the garden's thematic narrative, highlighting the cultural and historical importance of water through art integrated into the landscape.
