Location

Jardim Constantino is located in the Saldanha area, in the parish of Arroios, in the heart of Lisbon. It is a green space integrated into the urban fabric of this central area of the city, delimited by streets such as Rua Passos Manuel, Rua do Mindelo, Rua José Estêvão, and Rua Pascoal de Melo. Its position within the grid of city blocks allows it to seamlessly fit into the daily dynamic of Lisbon life.

A Name with History

Inaugurated in 1889, the garden was named in honor of Constantino José Marques de Sampaio e Melo. This notable 19th-century figure was a Portuguese florist who achieved great recognition, known as the "King of Florists." His talent in the art of floriculture earned him awards at international exhibitions, such as in Paris and London, and the distinction of working for European royal houses. The decision to name this green space in Lisbon recalled his importance and legacy. More recently, an initiative sought to perpetuate his memory at the site, with the placement of a plaque and the inclusion of a camellia in the Portuguese pavement, celebrating his connection to flowers.

Elements of the Garden

Jardim Constantino presents some distinct features for visitors. It has a lake with a fountain, which adds a point of visual and auditory tranquility. For families, there is a playground that offers a space for children to play. In the center of the garden, there is a kiosk. Among the vegetation, two trees stand out as classified as of Public Interest: a Melaleuca styphelioides, noted as a unique specimen in Lisbon, and an Australian fig tree, remarkable for its size. In one of the garden's flowerbeds, there is also a statue dedicated to Prometheus.

Urban and Leisure Environment

As a typical garden located in a bustling residential area of Lisbon, Jardim Constantino offers a place for pause and leisure. Covering about 3000 square meters, the space is organized with paths marked by Portuguese pavement and flowerbeds containing various plant species. The available benches allow visitors to enjoy the shade of the trees, making it a place for socializing and rest for those seeking a moment of tranquility in the urban environment.
