This garden is located in Lisbon, in the area corresponding to Campo dos Mártires da Pátria. The Braamcamp Freire Garden occupies the southern part of this well-known square, in an area that historically belonged to the parish of Pena and is now part of Arroios.
The area where the garden is located has a rich and varied history. At different times, this space served as a slaughterhouse, bullring, and housed the popular Feira da Ladra (Thieves' Market). A particularly significant moment was the year 1817, when executions occurred that would give the surrounding square its current name, Campo dos Mártires da Pátria.
With an area of approximately 2 hectares, the garden invites a tranquil stroll through its organic layout. It features aquatic elements in the form of lakes and has a terrace for relaxation. Various pieces of statuary enrich the space, which is also home to some exotic birds.
The botanical heritage is one of this garden's great attractions. It houses a diversity of tree species, with emphasis on several specimens classified as Trees of Public Interest. Of particular note is an imposing Himalayan cedar, a centuries-old tree with a generous canopy, and other notable species such as the paper mulberry, metrosideros, kapok tree (sumaúma), bella-sombra (ombu), ginkgo, and grevillea.
Along the garden path, visitors will find a statue dedicated to Dr. Sousa Martins, one of the sculptural pieces that punctuate the green space.
