The António Viana Barreto Garden is located in Pedrouços, in the Belém area of Lisbon, extending along Avenida de Brasília. Its location is privileged, next to the bank of the Tagus River, offering a wide and unobstructed view of the water and the opposite bank. It is situated in an urban area characterized by its proximity to the capital's riverside landscape, inviting an atmosphere of calm by the river.

Homage and Past of the Site

This garden was named in 2021, by municipal edict, in homage to António Viana Barreto, a notable Portuguese landscape architect (1924-2012), whose legacy is recognized in the Portuguese landscape architecture scene. Originally known as the Belém Tower Garden, this green space occupies an area with a significant industrial past.

Until the mid-20th century, the site where the garden is now developed was occupied by the Belém Gasworks. This transformation from an industrial area to a space for leisure and nature illustrates the evolution of Lisbon's riverside, which was gradually converted for public and recreational use.
