The construction of this church originated from the need to replace the old Ajuda church, which was located near the royal palace and was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755. The new church began to be built years later, at the end of the 18th century, and was only completed in the early 19th century. Its location and existence are intimately linked to the presence of the royal court in the Ajuda area after the earthquake.
The building predominantly features a Neoclassical style, reflecting the aesthetic of its construction era in the aftermath of Lisbon's reconstruction. It boasts a sober and balanced facade, with typical elements of the period. The interior follows a simple, longitudinal plan, characteristic of churches designed for congregation.
Upon entering, you will find a harmonious space where the main altar and various side chapels stand out. Inside, there are several pieces of sacred art, including sculptures and paintings primarily dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The atmosphere invites contemplation and showcases the religious decoration of the period.
The church is dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier, a saint of great importance to the Catholic Church. He was one of the first companions of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and one of the founders of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). He is famous for his extensive missionary journeys throughout Asia in the 16th century.
Today, the Parish Church of Saint Francis Xavier continues to be a vital religious center for the community of Belém. It is an active parish church where religious services are regularly held. It represents a testament to the city's reconstruction after the earthquake and the religious life connected to the Belém and Ajuda area throughout the centuries.
