The Parish Church of Our Lady of Purification is located in the locality of Sapataria, a village in the municipality of Sobral de Monte Agraço. It is specifically found in the Casal Novo housing development, an environment that invites tranquility and the discovery of local heritage. Its presence is central to the life of this community.
This church possesses ancient foundations, testifying to the region's history. On the exterior, its Manueline portal stands out, an architectural element that remains as a legacy of a significant era of Portuguese art. Additionally, on the exterior facade, an old sundial can be observed, a detail that reminds us of the passage of time and the practices of other centuries.
Upon entering the church space, it is possible to discover an interior that reveals various layers of its construction and devotion. The high choir draws attention, as it is supported by two singular columns that integrate holy water fonts within their own shafts. Two other holy water fonts also deserve observation, one of them an elegant example with Renaissance-inspired ornaments. On the nave walls, the lower section is covered with 17th-century tiles of "maçaroca" pattern, while the side altars feature a cladding of Hispano-Arabic tiles. The chancel is enriched by two Pombaline panels on its walls, which are distinguished by the quality of the painting and the careful composition of the figures. In the sacristy, there is a small 17th-century chest with its original ironwork, and an oratory that displays paintings and carved elements.
