Location

The Mother Church of Castanheira do Ribatejo stands in a prominent position in the heart of the locality of Castanheira do Ribatejo, belonging to the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. It is set in an inviting square, which gives it a spacious and distinguished setting within the urban fabric. Around it, there is a garden where ancient stone elements can be observed, contributing to the historic and welcoming atmosphere of the place.

A Historic Legacy

Dating back to the 16th century, the church's foundation dates to 1534, at the initiative of D. António de Ataíde, the first Count of Castanheira. Over the centuries, the building has witnessed and integrated into the life of the community, functioning since its origin as a parish church. Its history is marked by important moments, such as the placement of the main altar's altarpiece in the mid-16th century and the application of the tiles that now adorn the nave in 1640. In 1755, the great earthquake that shook Portugal caused significant damage, including the collapse of the nave's vault, an event that shaped its current configuration.

Architectural and Artistic Richness

This church features a fusion of Renaissance and Mannerist styles in its architecture. The main facade is notable for its perfect arch portal, with fluted shaft columns and a profusion of ornaments including medallions with human figures and delicately worked rosettes. Attached to the chancel, the square-section bell tower completes the exterior volume.

Inside, the single nave reveals walls covered with carpet-style tiles, displaying distinct patterns that create a visually rich atmosphere. The altars, in gilded woodcarving, reflect the national Baroque style, lending grandeur to the space. Worthy of note is the main altar's altarpiece, with pseudo-Solomonic columns adorned with fruits and birds, and the Renaissance-inspired baptismal font. The chancel, in turn, is covered by a painted wooden coffered ceiling and still holds traces of original polychromy, revealing the artistic beauty of the ensemble.
