Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Lisboa > Odivelas > Odivelas > Bairro Espírito Santo

Location

The Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, also known as the Mother Church of Odivelas, is located in Bairro Espírito Santo, in the town of Odivelas. Erected on elevated ground, it adapts to the terrain's slope and stands out in the urban environment. Access to the temple is via a front churchyard, supported by masonry walls, and a two-flight staircase that converges, giving it an imposing presence.

Historical and Heritage Journey

With roots in the 16th century, this church is a testament to Odivelas' long history. Although the date of 1573, present on a sacristy lavabo, points to the construction of the original temple, the current structure is the result of a profound reconstruction initiated in the late 17th century, around 1680, as indicated by the date on an exterior cross. Throughout the 18th century, the building underwent further interventions, including restoration work after the 1755 earthquake, which caused considerable damage. Its importance is underscored by its classification as a Property of Public Interest, awarded in 2005.

Exterior Aesthetics and Details

The church's Baroque facade is characterized by its white, unadorned appearance, which contrasts with the richness awaiting inside. The main portal, in stonework, stands out for its false concave shape, flanked by angular pilasters and topped by a pediment displaying the patron saint's image and decorative swags. Although designed to have a more elaborate facade, with complete bell towers, the church presents a harmonious main body that invites the discovery of its artistic elements.

The Artistic Richness of the Interior

Inside, the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus reveals a vast and detailed artistic heritage. The nave walls are adorned with monochromatic tile panels, in blue and white, dating from the period before 1740, depicting religious allegories and biblical scenes. The nave's ceiling, a false barrel vault, is decorated with paintings combining the grisaille technique with polychromatic elements, representing symbolic figures such as the Phoenix and the pelican, in rectangular panels.

Unique Pieces and Ornamentation

The chancel, narrower and slightly lower than the nave, is a notable example of 18th-century stonework, with a coffered vault in black and red limestone. The various side chapels house gilded carved altarpieces, exemplifying the Joanine and Rococo styles, each with its own iconography. Special attention should be given to the 16th-century lavabo in the sacristy, dated 1573, whose basin has a singular ship-like shape. The baptismal fonts, in turn, are made of red marble and feature an elaborate rocaille style.
