The Church of São Pedro is serenely integrated into the locality of Dois Portos, Torres Vedras municipality. Specifically, it is situated in the area known as Casal de São Pedro, a zone that offers a calmer and more traditional environment. Its location allows visitors to enjoy a setting of greater tranquility, characteristic of Portuguese historical villages.
The history of the Church of São Pedro dates back to the first third of the 16th century, when it was erected with an architectural structure significant for its time. Although the exterior underwent a profound renovation in the 18th century, adopting a baroque style for its facade, the interior managed to preserve much of its original design. This building is recognized as a Property of Public Interest, a testament to its historical and cultural value.
Upon crossing the church's threshold, visitors encounter a space of three naves, divided by rounded arches and columns that reveal 16th-century taste, with their Ionic capitals. The walls display a lining of 16th-century tiles, in shades of green and white, adding a chromatic touch. However, the most distinctive and captivating element is the cedar wood ceiling that covers two-thirds of the central nave. This remarkable alfarge work features an intertwining of moldings forming arabesques, adorned with polychromy and gilding. It is a rare example of the combination of classicist aesthetics and decorative elements of Mudéjar influence in Portugal, and one of the few churches in the Lisbon region to retain a ceiling with this technique and ornamental paintings on its arches and columns.
