The Church of Our Lady of the Gate of Heaven is located in Telheiras Sul, an urbanized area of Lisbon. Integrated into an environment that combines modern residential areas with green spaces, the church offers a point of historical and cultural interest that stands out in the contemporary landscape of the Lumiar parish, in the Portuguese capital.
The history of the Church of Our Lady of the Gate of Heaven begins in the 17th century, with its foundation between 1632 and 1633 by D. João de Cândia, a prince from Ceylon. This nobleman, who settled in Lisbon, acquired the land in Telheiras in 1625 with the intention of creating a convent for Franciscan friars, for their reception and convalescence. The site where the church was built was previously a small hermitage dedicated to Our Lady of Heaven, which existed as early as 1614.
D. João de Cândia left a lasting legacy, and his tomb can be found inside the church, marking his deep connection to this place. A coat of arms, granted to the prince in 1625 by Philip IV, and which was once in the church, is now preserved in the Carmo Archaeological Museum, illustrating his personal history and that of the institution.
The church's architecture reflects the vicissitudes and various interventions over time, presenting a style that blends Mannerist, Baroque, and Pombaline elements. Its main façade, facing North, displays a sober portal, topped by an elaborately contoured window. Above this, a Latin inscription, dated 1768, celebrates the temple's reconstruction after the great earthquake of 1755, a project that had royal patronage and the supervision of the future Marquis of Pombal.
Inside, the single nave, with its whitewashed walls and granite flagstone floor, culminates in the chancel. The triumphal arch that precedes it is crowned by a stucco pediment, notable for its composition that includes the Portuguese shield, the emblem of the key of the Gate of Heaven, and a royal crown, details that emphasize the symbolic importance and artistic richness of the space.
The name of the church, Our Lady of the Gate of Heaven, alludes to a Marian invocation that is particularly unique in Portugal. The symbolism centers on the Virgin Mary as the "gate" through which heavenly bliss is reached, and she is depicted holding a key. This silver key, which belonged to the image of the patroness, had a very practical and moving meaning for the local community.
Traditionally, the key was taken to the homes of the sick and dying of Telheiras, in a gesture of comfort and faith. This practice underscores the cultural and popular dimension of the cult, which transcends the building's architecture and reveals the population's deep devotion to their patroness, placing in her image the hope for comfort and access to the afterlife.
