The Santa Apolónia Fort Geomonument is located in the urban area of Penha de França, in Lisbon. This ancient military bastion is situated in an isolated manner within the city's fabric, specifically on Calçada das Lages and Rua do Forte de Santa Apolónia, lending it a distinct and more tranquil atmosphere in the heart of the capital.
The Santa Apolónia Fort represents a vestige of 17th-century military architecture. Its construction took place between 1652 and 1668, with the purpose of fortifying and defending the city. Originally, the structure followed a pentagonal plan, characteristic of fortifications of that era. Over time, the fort lost its defensive function, later being integrated into the grounds of the former Quinta do Manique, which led to some alterations in its original configuration. Currently, it serves as a landmark of historical and cultural interest in the Lisbon landscape.
Significant parts of what was once a robust fortification can still be observed. The northwest and southeast flanks stand out, each approximately 45 meters long, connected by the gorge wall, the latter still partly original. The walls are constructed from masonry, complemented by quoins of limestone ashlar. In these corners, inverted conical elements that served as bases for sentry boxes are noticeable, highlighting details of its defensive design. Inside, a flight of steps attached to one of the walls also remains, allowing a glimpse of what is left of its internal layout.
