Garagem Sul is located in the historic area of Belém, in Lisbon, an area known for its proximity to the Tagus river and the presence of important cultural landmarks. It is housed within a prominent architectural complex, positioned in a part that once served a different purpose, now converted into a space dedicated to culture.
Since 2012, Garagem Sul has been a dynamic center for architecture, hosting a diversity of exhibitions, conferences, and debates. It functions as a laboratory of ideas, exploring the different mechanisms that shape the spaces we inhabit. It is a venue that actively contributes to positioning Lisbon as a point of reference in contemporary architectural thought and debate, both nationally and internationally.
What makes Garagem Sul particularly interesting is its genesis. Occupying the premises of an old garage, the space was skillfully reconfigured for its cultural purpose. The intervention project took advantage of the original structure, creating an environment with a unique dimension and atmosphere for the presentation of architectural works and concepts. One of the distinctive elements is a large semi-elliptical central space, which evokes the feeling of a square or a forum, and from which the thematic areas of the exhibitions radiate. The use of materials such as galvanized steel gives the environment a texture and reflectivity that result in an aesthetic that is simultaneously ornamental, vibrant, and urban.
Garagem Sul is dedicated to presenting a regular program of temporary exhibitions, which cover a wide range of topics within the universe of architecture. From the exploration of acclaimed authors to less evident fields of this discipline, themes vary from concepts such as the relationship between agriculture and architecture, the economy of means, or the very nature of ornamentation. The venue serves as a multifaceted platform, demonstrating how architecture occupies a central position in our lives and influences the transformation of the environment in which we live.
