Located in the Campo Grande area of Lisbon, the gallery is situated in an urban area with green spaces and various institutions. It is a place that reflects a different facet of Lisbon life, blending academic and residential environments.
The history of Galeria 111 dates back to 1964, an initiative of the collector Manuel de Brito. It began uniquely, integrated into a bookstore of the same name. This initial space was not just a place to see art; it functioned as a cultural meeting point, a salon where ideas were debated, records were listened to, and, discreetly, books that might have been difficult to access elsewhere at the time could be found.
Since its foundation, Galeria 111 has dedicated its activities to the promotion and dissemination of modern and contemporary art. It presents an exhibition program that seeks to showcase the work of relevant artists, both Portuguese and foreign, contributing to the city's artistic landscape.
Alongside the gallery's activities, its founder, Manuel de Brito, amassed a significant art collection. This private collection focuses on Portuguese artistic production from the 1950s to the 1990s. Although distinct from the gallery itself, the collection is a reflection of its creator's journey and vision, and part of its holdings may sometimes be accessible to the public through exhibitions or initiatives associated with the Manuel de Brito Art Centre.
