Fort Simplício is located in the village of Alqueidão, parish of Santo Quintino, in the municipality of Sobral de Monte Agraço. It stands in a strategic position on the Serra do Olmeiro (Olmeiro Mountain Range), at an altitude of 424 meters, situated in a predominantly rural environment. Historically, this elevation was a decisive factor for its military function and, currently, it provides a comprehensive panorama of the surrounding landscape.

Historical Legacy

Built in the 19th century, Fort Simplício is an integral part of the first defensive line of the Lines of Torres Vedras, a remarkable system of fortifications built to protect Lisbon from French invasions during the Peninsular War. It served as an advanced fort for Monte Agraço, designed to accommodate a garrison of approximately 300 soldiers.

Its strategic importance lay in its crossfire capability with other neighboring forts, such as Fort Machado and Fort Trinta, and complementing Fort Alqueidão, effectively controlling access to the mountain range and reinforcing the defense of the territory.
