The Arpim Fort stands in the Mato da Cruz area, within the locality of Bucelas, in the municipality of Loures. Situated at an altitude of 227 meters, this former military post enjoys an elevated position that afforded it a vast and strategic perspective over the surrounding rural landscape. Its accessibility is ensured by the road connecting Alverca to Bucelas, facilitating visits to this historical-military point of interest.
Built in the early 19th century, the Arpim Fort is a fundamental piece of the vast defensive system known as the Lines of Torres Vedras. This complex of fortifications was erected under the direction of General Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) with the purpose of protecting Lisbon from French invasions during the Peninsular War. Although the Arpim Fort was never directly involved in combat, its presence was crucial for the strategic cohesion of the first defensive line, acting as a link between the positions of Calhandriz and the rear line that began at Forte da Casa.
The design of the Arpim Fort reflects 19th-century military engineering, conceived to maximize defense. Its plan features an irregular seven-sided polygonal shape, surrounded by a moat that reinforced its robustness. Despite being mostly an earthen construction, archaeological studies have revealed the existence of masonry and wooden components in its structure. Inside, it is possible to observe the spaces for the gun emplacements, where artillery would have been stationed, and a powder magazine that is still in good condition, intended for the safe storage of ammunition. The fort was designed to house a garrison of approximately 250 soldiers.
Currently, the Arpim Fort is recognized as an important historical-cultural landmark. Its inclusion in the classification of the Lines of Torres Vedras underscores the relevance of its role in the defense of Portuguese territory. Visiting this fort allows for an immersion in the country's military history and an understanding of the magnitude of this defensive system, which, despite not having been tested in battle at this specific point, was vital for Portugal's independence. It is a place that invites reflection on the events that shaped the region, enveloped in a landscape that retains its rural essence.
