Located in the Ribamar area, in the parish of Santo Isidoro, municipality of Mafra, Santa Susana Fort is strategically positioned along the coast. Rising south of São Lourenço Beach, this location offers a broad perspective over the coastline and the immensity of the Atlantic. Its proximity to the ocean provides it with an expansive view and an environment naturally exposed to maritime elements.
Santa Susana Fort, also identified in historical documents as São Lourenço Fort, originated during the turbulent period of the Portuguese Restoration War, between the years 1640 and 1668. Its construction was a crucial coastal defense measure, outlined by the War Council of King D. João IV, aiming to protect national territory both from potential invasions by Spain and from the frequent corsair attacks that plagued the Portuguese coast. It thus represents a testament to the military vigilance of the era.
The strategic importance of Santa Susana Fort transcended its initial purpose. In the context of the Peninsular War, which took place between 1807 and 1814, this structure was integrated into the second line of the celebrated Lines of Torres Vedras. This complex defensive system, conceived under the direction of the Duke of Wellington, was essential for safeguarding the city of Lisbon from the advance of French troops. Subsequently, the fort remained in service to the country, functioning as a military barracks until the mid-20th century, when its management was transferred to the Fiscal Guard.
Currently, Santa Susana Fort remains in a good state of conservation, reflecting the resilience of its architecture throughout the centuries. Although its interior is not accessible to the public, the robustness of its exterior structure invites careful observation and a journey into the past. Its imposing presence in Mafra's coastal landscape offers a unique perspective on ancient military fortifications, and its seafront location, despite exposing it to the constant action of the ocean, provides a naturally beautiful setting for a peaceful and contemplative visit.
