Situated in Ericeira, within the municipality of Mafra, the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Natividade stands in a prominent position by the seaside. Its elevated location offers a sweeping view of the Praia dos Pescadores and the immense Atlantic Ocean, serving as an easily identifiable landmark on the village's coastal landscape.

A Window to the Maritime Past

Built in 1706, by order of D. Pedro II, the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Natividade was born from the need to protect the fishing port of Ericeira and its beaches. Its construction was essential for the defense of the community and local maritime activities against potential threats from the sea.

Throughout the centuries, this fortification underwent challenging periods, including times of abandonment and degradation, especially after the Peninsular War. However, it has been the subject of several recovery interventions, which have allowed it to maintain its presence. The fort also served as a post for the Fiscal Guard, adapting to security and surveillance needs over time.

Architecture and Views

The fort features an irregular "U" shaped plan, with a structure that develops on stepped levels, culminating in a terrace. Its configuration includes a battery facing the sea, equipped with parapets with openings for artillery, as well as three vaulted buildings that served as barracks and a powder magazine for storage.

On the side facing inland, the main entrance is distinguished by a perfectly rounded archway, crafted from stonework, topped by a plaque and a royal coat of arms. This gateway is a notable architectural element that invites exploration of the interior. The views from the fort are one of its greatest attractions, allowing observation of the coastline and the vastness of the ocean.
