Monsanto Fort is located at the highest point of the Serra de Monsanto, in the Benfica area, within the limits of the city of Lisbon. This elevated position gives it a distinct presence in the capital's urban landscape, being visible from several points across the city.
Built between 1863 and 1878, Monsanto Fort was part of the Lisbon Entrenched Camp. This was a system of fortifications designed for the defense of the Portuguese capital in the late 19th century. Its strategic location, at the highest point of the city, allowed its artillery to control the surrounding area. Initially classified as a 1st class war fortress, its military function was discontinued after World War I.
The architecture of Monsanto Fort is notable for its circular shape and dome-like appearance. The structure was designed to be resistant, with an exterior concrete shell intended to withstand bomb impacts. Inside, the fort is organized into three floors, which originally served as artillery batteries. A moat externally surrounds the fortification, complementing its defensive design.
Even before ceasing to be an active military fortress, the fort began to be used as a military prison. After its complete deactivation for defensive purposes, the structure was adapted to function as a civil prison. Currently, the site houses the Monsanto Prison Establishment, a maximum-security facility after renovation works completed in 2007. It is important to note that, due to its current function, Monsanto Fort is not open for public visits.
