Bececarias Fort is located in the village of Barrocas, within the municipality of Torres Vedras, in the parish of São Pedro da Cadeira. Built at an altitude of 34 meters, this fort benefits from a position that was once strategic, offering a wide perspective over the rural surroundings. Its location allows visitors to enjoy the tranquility of the countryside and imagine the defensive scenario that unfolded there.
Dating from the 19th century, Bececarias Fort is an important piece of military architecture and a fundamental testament to the so-called Lines of Torres Vedras. This defensive structure, classified as "military work no. 146", was part of the first line of the grand system aimed at protecting Lisbon from French invasions during the Peninsular War. It was designed to house a garrison of approximately 250 soldiers and equipped with artillery pieces, demonstrating its tactical relevance in the overall defense.
Bececarias Fort, initially a vital point of military strategy, today assumes a cultural and recreational role, functioning as a significant historical landmark. Its designation "Bessecaria" was attributed in 1810 by Major Brandão de Sousa, giving it a unique identity within the vast defensive complex. By visiting this site, one has the opportunity to directly engage with a piece of Portuguese history, observing the characteristics of a rural fortification of the era and understanding the grandeur of the defensive effort of the early 19th century.
