Situated in the Prezinheira urbanization, in the locality of Vale de São Gião, municipality of Mafra, the 1st Fort of Prezinheira stands at an altitude of 215 meters. Its strategic position, to the right of the Montachique gorge, places it in a predominantly rural setting, offering a tranquil environment and a perspective of the region's landscape.
Also known as the Captain's Fort, this 19th-century military work is a fundamental testament to the Torres Vedras Lines. The fort was part of the second line of the imposing defensive system built to protect Lisbon and the national territory during the French Invasions. Its construction was decided by order of General Wellesley, marking a crucial period in Portugal's history.
The 1st Fort of Prezinheira represents an example of 19th-century military architecture. It was designed to house a garrison of approximately 190 soldiers, highlighting its role in the defensive strategy of the time. Historical records indicate that its protection included three 9-pounder artillery pieces, essential for controlling the gorge. Currently, the fort is recognized as a historical-cultural landmark, maintaining a good state of conservation.
