The Lime Kilns are situated in the heart of the Historic Urban Centre of Paço de Arcos, in Oeiras. This complex of old industrial structures is aligned along one side of Rua dos Fornos, harmoniously integrated into the traditional fabric of the locality. Its location allows visitors a perspective on the evolution and history of the area.

A Legacy of Centuries

The history of the Lime Kilns in Paço de Arcos dates back at least to 1582, the year of their first known mention. For hundreds of years, the operation of these kilns constituted one of the main economic activities of the region, fundamental to its development. The production of lime was intrinsically linked to the abundance of local quarries and the growing need for this material in construction, including military buildings. Their strategic position, with easy access to raw materials and a natural port for distribution, was crucial for the prosperity of this industry.

Recognizing their importance, the Lime Kilns were classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest) in 2002, ensuring their preservation as an integral part of Portuguese heritage.

Architecture and Craftsmanship

The complex is composed of five robust kilns, built of stone with remarkable resistance. Each structure has a circular plan and a truncated-conical shape, with approximately 9 metres in diameter at the base. Their interior, carefully lined with brick, formed a single chamber, or "caldeira" (boiler), specifically designed for the stone burning process.

The operation of these kilns was a complex process: each firing operation could take between 20 to 30 hours, transforming approximately 150 tons of stone into lime. Observing these imposing structures allows visitors to imagine the labour and ingenuity involved. On-site, informational panels help to understand the lime transformation process, revealing a little more about this ancestral craft.

The Lime Kilns represent a palpable testament to the industrial past of Paço de Arcos. They are a symbol of human ingenuity and the relevance of lime production for the economic and social development of the region over the centuries.
