The Monumental Fountain of Belém is located in the heart of the Praça do Império, a vast garden space situated in the distinguished parish of Belém, Lisbon. This location is known for its pleasant atmosphere and popularity, especially during the warmer months. The fountain occupies a central position, standing out in the surrounding urban landscape.
This imposing fountain was designed for the occasion of the Exposição do Mundo Português (Portuguese World Exhibition), a landmark event that took place in 1940. Its design incorporates a remarkable symbolic element: a set of 32 coats of arms. These shields, skillfully created through the technique of mosaico-cultura (mosaic cultivation), using shrubs and small flowers, represent the former overseas provinces of Portugal, referencing the history and vastness of the former empire.
In addition to its garden elements, the Monumental Fountain is enhanced by four peripheral lakes that complement its central structure. In these water mirrors, two imposing sculptural groups stand out, depicting mythical figures of horses with the tails of marine animals. These sculptures contribute to the aesthetic beauty of the ensemble, giving it a unique artistic dimension and an appealing visual setting.
As night falls, the Monumental Fountain of Belém transforms, offering a spectacle of light and color. The water jets, illuminated by a multicolor system, create a dynamic and engaging visual effect. This nighttime illumination lends the fountain a distinct beauty and charm, inviting observers to appreciate how water and light dance, painting the center of Praça do Império with vibrant and memorable hues.
