Design and Aesthetics:

Designed by landscape architect Viana Barreto, this fountain is distinguished by its modernist approach and the simplicity of its lines. Constructed predominantly from liòz, a limestone common in the region, the fountain features a large circular basin, the interior of which is lined with small blue tiles. Water flows from a double spout, giving it direct functionality and a serene appearance. The ensemble is framed by a tall, rusticated glass wall on two of its sides, and the Municipal coat of arms, sculpted in relief, completes its ornamentation, adding a symbolic touch to its design.

Historical Context:

The Modernist Fountain was erected in 1962, during a period of significant urban transformation in Sintra, driven by the expansion project of the Volta do Duche. Its construction marked a change in the location, as it involved the removal of a previous fountain, the Moorish Fountain, which had existed there since 1922.
