In the municipality of Oeiras, in the locality of Figueirinha, there is a notable sculptural representation dedicated to Fernando Pessoa. This work is set within the vast Parque dos Poetas, a space that offers a green and inviting environment. The statue stands at a point that allows visitors a tranquil contemplation, framed by the carefully maintained landscape of the park.
The "Fernando Pessoa place" materializes in an imposing sculpture that pays homage to one of the greatest figures in Portuguese literature. The work, authored by Francisco Simões, is conceived in white Estremoz marble, a material that gives it a striking presence and a particular luminosity. The work, executed with the bouchard technique, which uses a pointed hammer, imparts a distinctive texture to the stone's surface, adding depth and character to the poet's figure.
The statue of Fernando Pessoa is rich in symbolism, capturing the essence of the author and his multifaceted work. The figure is portrayed with his most recognizable features: the hat, the tie, and the trench coat, elements that have become iconic of his image. In the poet's left hand, one can observe the book Mensagem, one of his seminal works, whose cover fluidly extends over the lapel of his trench coat, symbolizing his vision of the Fifth Empire.
The composition of the statue's head, with its three tiers, evokes the esoteric categories that so fascinated Pessoa. Around the sculpture, on the lawn, some scattered stones allude to the vast and complex literary work of his famous heteronyms, Alberto Caeiro, Álvaro de Campos, and Ricardo Reis. This sculptural ensemble invites reflection on the profound fragmentation of the "self" and the multiplication of identities, central themes in Fernando Pessoa's poetry.
