Category: Civil Architecture > Lighthouse

Location

The Cabo da Roca Lighthouse is located in a place of exceptional geographical significance: the westernmost point of the European continent. Situated in the Cabo da Roca urbanization, in the locality of Colares, Sintra municipality, its position is elevated. At an altitude of 165 meters above sea level and perched atop an imposing cliff, this location offers a breathtaking perspective over the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, marking a dramatic encounter between land and sea.

A History of Light

This lighthouse is one of the oldest still in operation on the Portuguese coast, with its construction dating back to 1772. It was one of six strategic luminous structures whose construction was ordered by a decree from the Marquis of Pombal in 1758. Since its inauguration, it has played a fundamental role as a guide and reference point for navigators, witnessing centuries of maritime history and technological evolution.

Architectural and Functional Features

The tower of the Cabo da Roca Lighthouse rises 22 meters high, displaying a quadrangular construction covered with white tiles. This aesthetic is complemented by the balcony and the lantern structure, which stand out with their red color, giving it a notable presence on the coastal landscape. Throughout its existence, the lighthouse has undergone various upgrades, from its electrification in 1897 to its automation in 1990, continuously adapting to advances in signaling technology.

In its vicinity, there are buildings that, in the past, served as residences for lighthouse keepers and housed support infrastructure, such as systems for producing acetylene gas and foghorns. Currently, a team of lighthouse keepers continues to ensure the operation and maintenance of this important maritime signaling landmark.

Symbolism and Landscape

The Cabo da Roca Lighthouse symbolizes the limit, the point where, as Luís de Camões expressed, "the land ends and the sea begins." This "finisterra" characteristic confers a profound meaning to the location, inviting contemplation of the oceanic immensity and reflection on the great voyages and human journeys. The strong presence of the lighthouse structure and the dramatic natural landscape that surrounds it, part of the Sintra-Cascais Protected Area, make this a privileged place to appreciate the grandeur and beauty of the Portuguese coast.
