The Belém Lighthouse, although no longer active at its original site, was based in the historic area of Belém, Lisbon. It stood on the bulwark of the imposing Belém Tower, an emblematic construction situated on the right bank of the Tagus River. Its strategic position offered a wide view of the estuary, essential for navigation.
The surrounding area is today an open and inviting space by the river, ideal for enjoying the landscape and the tranquility of the Tagus.
This spot in Belém marks the location where the Belém Lighthouse once operated, a crucial element in the maritime signaling of the Portuguese capital. Its lantern, installed in a square iron lattice structure about eight meters high, was erected on the bulwark of the Belém Tower in 1865. For decades, it served as a beacon for ships navigating the Tagus, complementing the system of fortifications that defended the city's entrance.
Although the original structure of the lighthouse lantern was deactivated and moved to another location in the 1930s and 1940s, the site where it stood remains steeped in history. The bulwark of the Belém Tower, where the lighthouse was installed, is an integral and visually striking part of the monument. It is distinguished by its robust construction and ornamental details, including its cylindrical turrets crowned by latticed domes.
This specific location on the tower evokes its evolution and multiple functions over the centuries, from military defense to its role as a maritime signaling post.
