Cabeço de Montachique Municipal Park is located in the northern area of the municipality of Loures, in the locality of Fanhões. It is situated in a rural area, characterized by extensive forest areas where leafy cork oak groves and dense stands of Portuguese oak stand out, accompanied by the typical vegetation of the region. This location, about ten kilometers from the city of Lisbon, provides an environment of tranquility and contact with nature, away from the urban pace.
With an area of 32 hectares, Cabeço de Montachique Municipal Park offers extensive forest facilities dedicated to leisure and sports activities. It is a place designed for socializing and active engagement, integrating harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. Its natural environment provides varied scenery, inviting exploration and outdoor relaxation, with a focus on the region's rich flora.
The creation of Cabeço de Montachique Municipal Park as a public recreation space began with the acquisition of part of its area by the Loures City Council in the early 1980s. Since then, this facility has established itself as a reference point for leisure and sports, welcoming visitors from across the Lisbon metropolitan area and consolidating its position as a green lung for the region.
The park hosts elements that tell part of the region's history. Notable heritage structures include a small fort that was an integral part of the historic Lines of Torres, a testament to a defensive past. There are also vestiges of old activities and cultural interest, such as an old lime kiln and an iron water mine. These points offer a glimpse into the past and the strategic or economic importance the site held in different eras.
Cabeço de Montachique Municipal Park was designed for various forms of recreation and movement. It includes several options for sports practice, such as an exercise circuit, tennis courts, a ball wall, and a multi-sport court. For those seeking adventure and challenges, the park offers tree climbing circuits and a zip line, as well as the possibility of practicing orienteering. Visitors will also find a playground and a spacious picnic area, serving as a meeting place for groups of various sizes. Nature observation, with its diversity of species, is also a possible activity in this space. Its design aims to ensure accessibility for people with reduced mobility.
