The Barcarena Gunpowder Factory is located in the heart of Nova Barcarena, in the locality of Barcarena, Oeiras municipality. This complex is nestled in a valley, characterized by its abundance of water, with the Barcarena Stream being a central element in its geography. The site, today a vast green and cultural space, offers a tranquil environment where industrial history merges with the surrounding nature.

Historical Memory

The history of the Gunpowder Factory dates back to a distant past, with the first references to occupation of this valley pointing to the existence of King's Ironworks in 1487, dedicated to weapon manufacturing. It was in the 17th century, around 1618-19, that the first workshop for black powder production was established here. Over the centuries, the factory played a crucial role in Barcarena's economic and social life, continuously adapting to new demands and technologies, from the initial water-powered methods to the introduction of the steam engine and electricity. The complex maintained its industrial function until its definitive closure in 1988.

Industrial Remains and Redevelopment

Following its acquisition by the Municipality of Oeiras in 1995, the old factory complex underwent a redevelopment project, transforming it into a cultural and leisure space. Various original buildings can be observed, testifying to the different stages of the gunpowder manufacturing process. Among them, highlights include the Engines' Reservoir, a large water reservoir essential for production, the Roller Mill Building, where the powder was cased, and the remnants of the old Steam Workshops. The presence of the Barcarena Stream and the aqueduct system are visible, underscoring the importance of water in the factory's operation. The courtyards, with their brick and stone paved surfaces, were carefully designed to prevent sparks, a detail revealing the nature of the activity carried out.

A Park of Culture and Leisure

Currently, the Barcarena Gunpowder Factory is a vibrant space where industrial memory coexists with the present. The former grounds and buildings have been transformed into gardens and an urban park, lending it an idyllic and inviting atmosphere. When visiting, one can explore the Black Powder Museum, which offers an in-depth perspective on the history and manufacturing process of gunpowder. The gardens, such as the Engines' Reservoir Garden and the Olive Grove Garden, as well as the Sun Square and the Drying Yard, invite leisurely strolls, allowing a connection between heritage and the natural environment, while hosting various cultural and artistic activities.
