The Estufa Fria (Cold Greenhouse) is located in the heart of Parque Eduardo VII, a vast green area in the Avenidas Novas district of Lisbon. It is situated in the central part of the park, easily identifiable by its distinct entrance near one of the large lakes that mark the space. Its position in the park offers a tranquil refuge in the heart of the city.
The history of this covered garden began unexpectedly, in a disused ancient basalt quarry. The discovery of a water spring on the site led to its use to house various plants, which initially would have had another destination. The name "Estufa Fria" (Cold Greenhouse) derives from the original design of the main space, which uses a wooden lath cover to naturally control temperature and light, dispensing with artificial heating.
Over time, the space evolved. In the 1940s, a large hall, the "Nave" (Nave/Hall), was integrated during a park renovation. Later, in 1975, the Estufa Quente (Hot Greenhouse) and Estufa Doce (Sweet Greenhouse) were added, significantly expanding the botanical collection and the diversity of represented environments.
Inside the Estufa Fria, visitors discover different environments that host an impressive botanical collection, with hundreds of species from various corners of the world. The space is divided into three distinct main areas, each recreating specific conditions for the plants it houses.
The main section, the original and largest Estufa Fria, houses plants that adapt to more moderate temperatures, protected by the wooden lath cover that filters light. Here one finds species such as azaleas and camellias. The Estufa Quente recreates a tropical climate, ideal for species such as mango trees, coffee plants, or banana trees. The Estufa Doce, on the other hand, is home to cacti and other succulent plants. This diversity allows for a varied journey through different plant landscapes.
Beyond its botanical richness, the Estufa Fria offers a unique atmosphere that transports visitors away from the urban environment outside. The path winds through lush vegetation, waterfalls that create soft water sounds, and small lakes. There are also grottoes and nooks that invite exploration.
The combination of recreated natural elements and the abundance of tropical and subtropical plants gives the space an atmosphere that can be described as wild and romantic, or even as a surreal jungle in the heart of the city. It is a place that invites contemplation and where time seems to slow down.
The space is not limited to nature and its functional architecture. Along the paths and in the garden's nooks, it is possible to find some works of art, such as statues by Portuguese artists, which complement the green and aquatic landscape. The entrance portico, designed by Francisco Keil do Amaral, is also a prominent architectural element that marks the access to this garden.
