- Chapel and Legend: The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades began to be built in 1604, after the miraculous image of the Saint protected a couple of weavers during the plague.
- Transformation: In 1705, King D. Pedro II, after being cured by this image, promised protection and built a palace and a convent on the site.
- Foundation: In 1747, D. João V donated the building to the Congregation of the Oratory, which taught theology and sciences.
- Importance: The convent became a prestigious teaching center, frequented by the elite and protected by the king.
- Royal Use: From 1833, the palace became the residence of several monarchs, including D. Maria II, D. Pedro V, and D. Carlos.
- Notable Events: The palace hosted important events, such as the wedding of Prince D. Carlos and visits from foreign heads of state.
- Revolution of 1910: The palace was bombed during the revolution that proclaimed the Republic, and the monarchy left the building.
- Change of Function: In 1916, the building became the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Current Architecture: The building features historical elements mixed with adaptations for the Ministry. It includes rooms such as the Blue Room and the Banquet Hall.
- Visits: The palace is an important reference in Portuguese foreign policy and continues to be a building of great historical significance.
