The Jardim da Parada dos Prazeres is located in the vibrant Prazeres area of Lisbon, within the municipality of Lisbon. This green space is peculiarly integrated into the urban fabric, functioning as a large landscaped roundabout. Its central position allows it to seamlessly blend into the city's daily life, offering a point of reference and a green counterpoint to the surrounding dynamism. It serves as a natural crossroads between different areas of the capital, marking a transition between adjacent neighborhoods.
The design of the Jardim da Parada dos Prazeres, projected by landscape architect Edgar Sampaio Fontes in 1954, features a concept that harmonizes different aesthetic approaches. The southern portion of the garden evokes a more romantic style, characterized by expansive lawns and paths that trace curvilinear lines, accompanying the seemingly organic arrangement of the trees. Conversely, the northern area reveals a more contemporary intervention, with raised flowerbeds where gravel strips alternate with carefully aligned shrubbery, offering an interesting visual contrast.
This garden represents an important green lung in Lisbon, with an area of approximately 7,000 square meters. It hosts a variety of tree and shrub species that contribute to its serene atmosphere and urban biodiversity. Among the flora present, a specimen of Tipuana Tipu stands out, recognized and classified as of Public Interest, as does the notable presence of centenarian hackberry trees. The abundant vegetation, with its leafy and tall trees, provides shade and a cool environment, making it a pleasant place for a break in the city.
The Jardim da Parada dos Prazeres was conceived as a place for recreation and relaxation for the community and visitors. At its center, a landscaped roundabout features a statue dedicated to Saint John Bosco, which was inaugurated there in 1988, serving as a focal point. The garden offers various amenities for enjoyment, such as wooden benches that invite rest, and freely available tables and chairs. For the younger ones, there is a playground and a small pond that adds a natural and inviting element. A bandstand present in the garden suggests a stage for culture and social gatherings, enriching the experience of those who visit it.
