Located in the parish of Estrela, in Lisbon.
National Monument since June 16, 1910.
Built in the 18th century. The project was started by Carlos Mardel and finished by Miguel Blasco in 1768. The construction arose after the Aqueduct of Free Waters, which improved the water supply in the city.
It was erected on land that belonged to the convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança and is supplied by the gallery with the same name, coming from the Amoreiras reservoir.
The fountain has two floors, each with a tank and two lateral staircases. The style is baroque, with a Pombaline portico.
The lower tank was intended as a drinking trough for animals, while the upper one was for people's use. Each had two spouts, reflecting concerns about public health.
