Location

The Garden of the Little Birds, officially designated Carlos Anjos Garden, is located in the heart of Monte Estoril, a tranquil and peculiar area of the municipality of Cascais. Its central location within the urbanization gives it landmark status for the local community, making it easily accessible for those exploring this coastal area, nestled within an urban environment that preserves a strong sense of neighborhood.

A Historical Legacy

Inaugurated on October 4, 1936, this green space quickly became an emblematic place. Despite its official name, it is popularly known as the Garden of the Little Birds, a designation due to the presence of a distinctive cage housing various small birds. This garden represents a milestone in the history of the Monte Estoril urbanization, serving for decades as a meeting and leisure point for several generations, establishing itself as an important element in the local collective memory.

The Iconic Cage and Its Inhabitants

One of the most striking elements of the Garden of the Little Birds is its cage. Although its exact origin is uncertain, its existence dates back to at least 1970, solidifying its importance in the collective memory of the place. Recently, the cage structure underwent careful requalification, seeking to preserve its original characteristics and its unique triangular shape. This renovation included improvements to the living conditions of the birds, with the introduction of new water mirror-shaped feeders, feeding troughs, and more spacious internal support structures, ensuring the well-being of its winged inhabitants. It should be noted that the bird community residing there remained unchanged, a detail considered relevant by experts during the intervention.

Harmony and Natural Environment

Beyond its famous cage, the Garden of the Little Birds offers a serene environment with several features that invite contemplation. Visitors can enjoy a small lake with its fountain, which contributes to the tranquil atmosphere of the place. The garden is also complemented by a playground, making it a welcoming space for families seeking a moment of outdoor relaxation. This green space, considered the heart of Monte Estoril, is a testament to the appreciation of public spaces and their role in community life.

Architectural and Craftsmanship Details

The requalification of the garden and its most notable elements reveals care for heritage and aesthetics. The cage structure, with its unusual shape, was meticulously renovated, and its interiors were carefully crafted. The artisanal work of a carpenter-artist who used acacia wood, sourced from controlled deforestation within the Natural Park, stands out, exemplifying a circular economy approach. Additionally, the kiosk present in the garden, whose design is attributed to the architect Jorge Segurado, a prominent figure in Portuguese modernist architecture, retains its original design, harmoniously integrating into the garden's setting as an element of historical and architectural interest that complements the beauty of the space.
