Conception and Architectural Heritage

The building that stands in the Water Mirror was designed in 1940 by architect António Lino. Its creation was directly linked to the Portuguese World Exhibition, originally serving as a support space for the event. The project is distinguished by its straight lines and a modernist aesthetic that integrates harmoniously into the riverside landscape. Over the decades, the building has undergone renovations, always seeking to preserve the essence and characteristics of the original design, testifying to the architectural and functional evolution of the space.

Artistic Expressions

The Water Mirror is a place where art manifests itself in various forms, integrating into its own structure and surroundings. Outside, the entrance is marked by a notable Portuguese pavement incorporating a screen-printed excerpt, a work by Angolan artist Yonamine Miguel. On the water mirror itself, three sculptures by Madeiran artist Rigo 23 are displayed. Inside the building, one of the most prominent pieces is an imposing mural by American artist Sol LeWitt, dating from 1990. This collection of artworks underscores the cultural vocation of the site and its connection to contemporary and historical artistic expression, offering different perspectives and points of interest for visitors.
