This large-scale archaeological excavation is located in the urban area of Campo Pequeno, in the city of Lisbon. This area is a central and dynamic reference point in the capital, characterized by its city life and easy integration into the urban fabric.
Excavation work on the site revealed a fascinating superposition of eras, providing a glimpse into the diverse human occupations over thousands of years. Discoveries span various periods, from the most remote signs of prehistoric presence, namely from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic, and even suggestions of Paleolithic occupation, to remains from more recent eras, such as Roman, Modern, and Contemporary. This multiplicity of historical strata demonstrates the continuous relevance of this geographical point throughout time.
Archaeological investigations identified a diverse set of constructive elements and traces of past activities. Stone masonry and lime mortar structures, mostly dated to the 19th century, were found. At a lower level, constructions and pits from the modern period, between the 17th and 18th centuries, are observed. Below these, remains of Roman chronology emerge, such as floors and wall foundations, suggesting the existence of an ancient residential area. Furthermore, the excavation brought to light the presence of an old cattle market, a railway line with its halt, and a tank associated with old rural farms in the area.
Although the structures found will not remain visible on site after the completion of the work, the knowledge and importance of these discoveries are fully preserved. The entire process is accompanied by a rigorous scientific record, which includes detailed photographs, written descriptions, and precise mappings. This method ensures that the memory of ancient occupations and the complexity of Lisbon's past, revealed in this excavation, are carefully documented and made available for future studies, enriching the city's cultural heritage.
