Praia do Sul is located in Ericeira, a fishing village in the municipality of Mafra, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Situated in a natural bay, it lies on the village's seafront, offering open views of the ocean and the cliffs that frame it. Access to the beach is easy, providing a direct connection to Ericeira's characteristic coastal environment.
This beach stands out for its vast sandy expanse, one of the most extensive in the region. Its bay-like conformation, sheltered by rock formations, provides it with natural protection. This characteristic makes it particularly sheltered from most winds, with the exception of those blowing directly from the west, contributing to a more tranquil and inviting atmosphere.
At Praia do Sul, various elements that shape its landscape can be observed. To the south, and also more centrally, the beach is divided by groynes that extend across the sand. In the northernmost area, there is an interesting saltwater pool, whose barriers were created from the existing rocks on site, blending harmoniously with the marine environment. Along the beach, especially in the southern part, there are rock blocks and slabs that enrich the natural scenery.
Praia do Sul is also known by the name "Praia da Baleia" (Whale Beach). This name originates from a significant event that occurred in 1872, when a cetacean beached itself at this location. Historically, this beach was recognized as a prime spot for bathing, frequented by members of the nobility and royalty during their visits to Ericeira, which gives it a certain symbolism linked to a more formal summer season.
