The pillory was erected in the 16th century, symbolizing the autonomy of the town, which received its charter in 1229. It was an important landmark until the municipality was extinguished in 1855.
In 1863, it was buried for protection. In the early 20th century, it was restored and, in 1924, placed back in its original location.
Made of granite, it has a square base with four carved leaves. The shaft is cylindrical, with a ring in the middle, and the capital, decorated with rosettes, ends in a conical pinnacle.
Located in Largo do Pelourinho, in front of the Parish Council, it is easily accessible and surrounded by historic buildings.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, it is an important cultural symbol of Ericeira, attracting tourists interested in local history.
