The Milreu Fort, also known as São Pedro Fort, is located in the parish of Ericeira, in the municipality of Mafra, in the district of Lisbon.
This fort is one of the last vestiges of fortifications built during the Restoration of Portugal's Independence in the 17th century. It was designed to protect maritime access to Ericeira and prevent unwanted landings in the bay of Ribeira de Ilhas beach.
The region has a long history of occupation, dating back to the Phoenicians, and was once an important sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Ericina during Roman times. During the Reconquista, the locality gained self-governing rights.
The fort was built in 1670 and, over the years, underwent several inspections and reconstructions due to damage caused by storms and an earthquake in 1755. In the early 19th century, it was repaired again.
The fort has a rectangular plan in the Mannerist style, with a terraced roof and an arched gate. It includes a battery with embrasures and two cylindrical turrets.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1977, the fort underwent conservation interventions in the 1980s, preserving its main structure, including the battery and the stronghouse.
The area around the fort offers stunning views over the sea, making it an ideal location for walks and observation. Ericeira is known for its beautiful beaches and tranquil atmosphere, ideal for relaxing.
The Milreu Fort is accessible to the public, allowing visitors to explore its history and enjoy the surrounding landscape.
