At the top of the Serra do Socorro, located in the parish of Enxara do Bispo, municipality of Mafra, near Torres Vedras. The chapel is integrated into a fortified village from the Iron Age and offers a wide view of the surrounding landscape.
Small hermitage from the 16th century, with Manueline elements, located on top of the mountain. According to tradition, the site was a mosque during the Arab occupation, later converted to Christianity.
The main altar stands out with the image of Our Lady of Socorro with the Child Jesus, accompanied by the images of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne. The nave features ribbed vaults and typical tiles of the time.
On August 5th, the chapel is the center of a popular pilgrimage that includes mass, procession and festival, attracting faithful and visitors from the region.
In the vicinity of the chapel, there are vestiges of an ancient fortified village, with remains of walls and constructions, providing a connection to the historical past of the region.
Near the chapel, an exhibition space offers information about the local history, including the role of the mountain in military defense during the French Invasions.
The Serra do Socorro offers stunning panoramic views, being an ideal place to admire the natural and historical beauty of the area.
