The statue of Dom Pedro I is located in Praça 5 de Outubro, a central and vibrant point in the heart of Cascais. Due to its position, this square serves as an important axis in the urban life of the town, being a place of passage and encounter for those exploring Cascais' coastal and historic environment. The presence of the statue contributes to the identity and unique character of this public space.
This monument pays tribute to Dom Pedro I, a Portuguese monarch whose actions were crucial to the history of Cascais. It was this king who, in the year 1364, granted Cascais its Town Charter. This historical document was a decisive milestone, attributing autonomy and official recognition to the locality, something of great importance for its development throughout the centuries. The statue was inaugurated on June 7, 1965, thus marking the sixth centenary of the granting of this charter.
The piece is a creation in bronze, authored by the Portuguese sculptor António Duarte. This artist is recognized as a prominent figure in the second generation of modernist sculptors in Portugal, giving the work remarkable artistic value. The statue's base, which supports it, was conceived from granite extracted from Malveira da Serra, a material personally chosen by the sculptor himself, demonstrating attention to detail and integration with local materials.
