Legacy of a Cultured Monarch

D. Dinis, a monarch who reigned in Portugal between 1279 and 1325, is an unavoidable figure in Portuguese history and culture, known by the epithets King-Poet and The Farmer. His reign was marked by significant advancements, notably the decisive impetus for the use of Portuguese in official documents. He was also the founder of the Estudo Geral in Lisbon, which would later evolve into the University, promoting the teaching of Arts, Civil and Canon Law, and Medicine.

His court became a prominent literary center in the Iberian Peninsula, with the king fostering the translation of significant works. Himself a talented troubadour, D. Dinis left a considerable poetic legacy, with songs of love, friendship, and malice, exemplary of Galician-Portuguese troubadourism, found in the famous Cancioneiros.
