The building known as Cine-Theatro is situated in the Casas Novas area, a residential zone in Almoçageme, within the municipality of Sintra. Its location offers integration into the daily life of the local community, providing a quieter environment in contrast to busier urban areas, while still maintaining good accessibility within the wider Sintra region.
Originally inaugurated in 1948 as Cine-Teatro Carlos Manuel, this space played a central role in Sintra's cultural life for approximately forty years. Its presence marked the memory of several generations of Sintra residents, who experienced moments of leisure and culture here. Its importance extended beyond film screenings, hosting various social and cultural events that became an integral part of the daily life of the community and the municipality.
The initial project for the Cine-Theatro, signed by architect Manuel Joaquim Norte Júnior, featured a singular aesthetic that combined elements of late modernism with Art Deco influences, giving the building a particular architectural identity. In 1985, a devastating fire severely damaged a large part of the structure, including the stage, orchestra pit, and auditorium. After a few years of sporadic use of the remaining spaces, the Sintra City Council recognized its symbolic and historical value, acquiring the property and promoting a profound rehabilitation and reconversion aimed at safeguarding its cultural importance.
Currently, the building functions as a cultural center equipped with high-quality technical and functional facilities, prepared to host a wide range of performances and events. It includes two main auditoriums: a large one, suitable for music, theater, opera, and dance performances, as well as for conferences and congresses; and a smaller auditorium, designed for film screenings and more intimate events. Additionally, the space offers several rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, and advanced technical infrastructure, making it a modern and versatile venue for artistic production and presentation.
