Chalet Barros stands in São João do Estoril, within the coastal surroundings of Cascais and Estoril. Its location is distinguished by its proximity to the sea and its privileged view over Praia do Tamariz, elements that contribute to its striking presence in the landscape of this area.
This unique building stands on the remains of an older military structure, the Forte de Santo António da Assubida, or Forte da Cruz, dating back to the 17th century. In 1894, João Martins de Barros acquired the ruins with the intention of building a summer residence there. Two years later, in 1896, the project was completed, transforming the old fortress into the imposing palacete observed today.
Chalet Barros is the result of the vision of Italian architect César Ianz. Its design displays a Neo-Romanesque style, enriched with references to Italian architecture and Neo-Manueline details, which give it the appearance of a medieval fortress.
The facade facing the beach is particularly characteristic, marked by two large turrets, whose parapets are crenellated and include a watchtower. The building is arranged over three floors, each with its own function and visual particularities. The lower floor features an arcade of perfect semi-circular arches, above which extends a panoramic terrace that juts out towards the sea. The noble floor, on the second level, is distinguished by its spaciousness and the careful design of its windows, which are perfect semi-circular arches and often double. At the center of the complex, a powerful square-based tower rises, reminiscent of the late medieval towers of Italian cities. On the north side, the property includes an irregular garden, reflecting the romantic style of the late 19th century, creating a more sheltered and intimate atmosphere.
Due to its historical and architectural significance, Chalet Barros was classified as a Monument of Public Interest in June 2023. Its unique silhouette and scenic location have made it one of the most frequently recorded and recognizable elements of the Estoril coastline.
