The Calvário Square Fountain is located in the city of Lisbon, within the Santo Amaro area. It currently adorns the Largo do Calvário, a space that evokes the traditional atmosphere of a Lisbon square. Its current location in the square is, in fact, a return, as this fountain has a history of relocation: after its initial installation in Largo do Calvário, it was temporarily moved to Travessa Teixeira Nunes, before being relocated again to its original starting point.
Built in 1852, the Calvário Square Fountain represents a significant element of Lisbon's 19th-century heritage. Its construction was designed to be integrated into the center of the small square, serving not only as a water supply point but also as an aesthetic landmark in local urbanism.
Architecturally, this fountain reveals a clear influence from the model of the Princesa Square Fountain, sharing with it not only design inspiration but also the same water source that ensured its operation. This shared water source and formal inspiration underscore the importance of fountains at the time, both for their practical function and for their contribution to the beauty and organization of the city's public spaces.
