Origin and Historical Legacy

The construction of the Chafariz de São Paulo dates back to 1849, although its need had been felt by the Lisbon population much earlier, since the 1755 earthquake. Its construction was a response to a long-held desire for a water supply point in a bustling area. Originally designed by Reinaldo dos Santos, the project was adapted to the taste of the era and finalized with the intervention of architect Malaquias Ferreira Leal. This fountain played a vital role in the daily life of the area, especially for the many maritime workers who passed through it, a fact highlighted by the inscription dedicated to these sea workers.

Architectural Conception

With a 19th-century design, the Chafariz de São Paulo stands out as a prominent feature in the square. Its obelisk-type design gives it a notable presence, harmonizing with the surrounding urban environment.
