The Chafariz de Santo António da Convalescença is located in the parish of São Domingos de Benfica, in the vibrant city of Lisbon. This imposing monument stands at the intersection of Estrada de Benfica and Travessa das Águas Boas, a confluence point once known as Cruz da Pedra. Its position marks a reference point in the area, bearing witness to the urban history of this part of the capital.
The construction of this fountain, also known as Chafariz das Águas Boas, dates back to the transition from the 18th to the 19th century, with its inauguration occurring around 1817. Its existence is due to the persistent need for water supply by the local population, who for decades requested a public fountain in the area. This popular demand culminated in a royal provision from D. Maria I, which ordered the exploitation of springs and the creation of a piping system, an integral part of the Aqueduto das Águas Livres complex.
In the 19th century, the fountain played a central role in water distribution in Lisbon. Historical records indicate that, in 1851, this location was the starting point for approximately 64 water carrier companies, involving around 2100 people who distributed water throughout the city. This activity highlights the fundamental importance of the fountain in the daily life and well-being of the Lisbon population at the time.
The Chafariz de Santo António da Convalescença stands out for its grandeur and rich architectural design. It is set in an elliptical space paved with traditional Portuguese cobblestones, delimited by six robust stone "frades" (pillars) and ornate iron railings. The ensemble displays lavish decoration, complemented by two curved masonry panels that integrate six stone benches, inviting a pause to appreciate the site.
The central piece is a magnificent espaldar (backsplash), richly decorated with baroque elements, displaying the royal coat of arms of D. João VI. Below, the inscription "REAL OBRA DE AGOAS LIVRES ANNO DE 1817" is visible. Although water no longer flows from its spouts today, the fountain retains its historical dignity, exhibiting a unique water tank from which two bronze spouts once gushed, adorned with details such as ribbons and draperies, which testify to the value of water and the aesthetic importance attributed to these urban elements.
