Location

The Laranjeiras Fountain is located in the parish of São Domingos de Benfica, in Lisbon. It is situated in an urban area, at a crossroads between Estrada das Laranjeiras and Calçada da Palma. Its position on a steep slope provides a unique setting, making it stand out in the city landscape. Opposite the fountain stands the historic Laranjeiras Palace, with which it once had a more direct connection.

Memory and History

Dating from the 18th century, more specifically between 1791 and 1795, the Laranjeiras Fountain was an important infrastructure for water supply to the city of Lisbon. Its construction was prompted by the need to bring water to this area, at the request of the 1st Baron of Quintela, owner of the Laranjeiras Palace. The work was designed by the stonemasons Honorato José Correia de Macedo e Sá and the architect Francisco António Ferreira Cangalhas. Originally, the fountain faced the palace, reflecting its connection to the former estate. However, in the mid-20th century, it was relocated to its current position, changing its orientation towards the city, and has since functioned as a cultural landmark.

Architectural Details

This limestone ashlar fountain exhibits a style characteristic of Pombaline architecture. Its rectilinear backrest features a smooth central body, flanked by two side panels simulating rustic stonework. At the top, a frieze and a counter-curved cornice stand out, where the Portuguese Coat of Arms is erected, from which hangs the Cross of Christ, all surrounded by ornaments such as shell motifs, volutes, and palm leaves. Two stipes, topped by urns with what appear to be flames, flank the ensemble. At their base, two spouts emerge which once poured water into the rectangular basin, with a curved profile and protruding edge, reinforced by iron brackets. Although water does not flow permanently as in the past, the structure retains its grandeur and artistic beauty.
